At Southport Orthodontics in Southport, we offer a choice of treatment options for adults and children, including NHS orthodontic treatment for children who qualify.
Whilst the NHS will fund some orthodontic treatment for children, patients with only mild irregularity who wish to have treatment for mainly cosmetic reasons may have to pay privately for this treatment. However, all children are entitled to a free NHS assessment.
If you would like your child to be referred to us for an NHS assessment please contact your dentist to request this.
During the assessment our orthodontist will determine whether your child qualifies for NHS funding via complex measurements, known as the Index of Orthodontic Need (IOTN).
Priority is given to those requiring treatment on dental health grounds including:
- Increased prominence of teeth that exceeds 6mm
- A major crowding of teeth
- Abnormal bites resulting in trauma
- Functional problems caused by abnormal bites
- Teeth that are missing or impacted
If your child does not qualify for NHS treatment, we can discuss private treatment options. Patients having treatment on a private basis benefit from a greater choice of appliances such as tooth coloured ceramic braces and Invisalign clear aligners for suitable cases.
